The FNMT-RCM

What are the origins of the FNMT-RCM?

In 1893, the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Royal Spanish Mint was born by the merging of two century-old organisations: the Casa de la Moneda (the Mint) and the Fábrica del Sello (Stamp Factory). Although they were independently run and under different management, these establishments had shared the Colon building since 1861. After becoming a single corporation under the common denominator of security, their scope of activity has never stopped expanding.

What kind of company is the FNMT-RCM?

The FNMT-RCM is a public business entity under the umbrella of the Ministry of Finance and Civil Service. On account of the type of work it does, the company has the distinct nature of a public service. In addition, it is opened to collaboration with private companies in any field requiring security elements and strict control of production, and in fact it has earned the trust and growing recognition of these corporations.

All its activities are based on integrated security: security applied to its products, its data processing, its facilities and to the production processes themselves.

Digital Certification

What is cryptography?

Cryptography (kryptos = hidden + graphe = writing) is the art of encrypted or enigmatic writing. In principle, it can be expressed as a set of techniques that make possible to ensure that only the addressee can decode the message. In today's world these techniques also allow the identification of the sender, verification of the message receipt, and a guarantee that the message has not been modified, etc...

What is a digital signature?

A digital signature is a set of data linked to a message which allows sender identity and message integrity to be proved. The digital signature does not imply that the message has been encrypted, that is to say, a signed message will be readable depending on whether or not it has been coded.

By means of a function, the signatory will generate a "summary" or digital print of the message. This summary or digital print is then encrypted with his private key, and the result is what we call digital signature. This signature will be sent by the signatory attached to the original message. The receiver of any message can verify that the message was not modified since it was created because he can generate the same summary or digital print by applying the same function to the message. Moreover, he can also verify the authorship by decoding the digital signature with the signatory's public key. This again will result in the summary of digital print of the message.

What is the CERES project?

The CERES project (CERtificación ESpañola - Spanish Certification), lead by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Royal Spanish Mint, consists of setting up a Public Certification Entity that will enable authentication and guarantee confidentiality in communications between citizens, companies and other institutions and the Public Administrations via the open communication networks.
